A Somatic UnravelingField Notes from the Cremation Grounds

A body broke down. The medical system didn't catch it. One woman built this record — alone, in real time — because no one else was keeping it.

The wounded storyteller

Not a recovery story.
A record of what remains.

01 //

The substrate & the collapse

Soccer from age five through high-school Olympic Development and two years of collegiate play laid the substrate. A 2003 shoulder surgery altered left-side biomechanics; the right side picked up the stabilization load and never put it down. Heavy camera gear and martial arts trauma deepened the debt.

In November 2023, during an active whistleblowing disclosure, an acute cervical injury collapsed the remaining margin. The body broke where institutional threat met biomechanical failure. MRI confirmed multi-level degeneration spanning C2–T1, foraminal narrowing, disc extrusion, and an inverted cervical curve. The cervical spine holds the origin. Everything else runs downstream.

02 //

The solitary witness

No partner in the next room to notice when speech faltered or spatial orientation warped. Modern medicine offered fragments — an imaging read here, a referral into a void there. No single provider held the full picture.

The patient became the witness, the chart, and the pattern-recognition engine — keeping the body alive while building the record of what was happening to it.

Why this record exists

Grief work
Naming what the prior body lost with precision, because that fact deserves more than clinical shorthand.
Forensic telemetry
Daily symptom mapping, tissue scans, and autonomic thresholds no single provider was tracking.
Survival architecture
Sharing the systems and protocols so the next person navigating somatic collapse alone does not have to draw the map twice.

The condition timeline

Cumulative load → living record
“The spine was already paying for everything.”

Soccer impact from age 5 through Olympic Development and collegiate play, shoulder reconstruction shifting biomechanics, and decades of right-side compensatory bracing. Heavy camera gear and a later martial arts injury added to the load. The proprioceptive system read capacity where there was only compounding debt.

The body continues to change. The record stays open. The living record

Last week I decided to load up my Kindle on feminist books written by powerful women and a few prolific BIPOC artists.

Grief and Gratitude Maybe those two words are the lesson for everything right now.

  3. Don't Internalize the Violence of the System ↗

Here’s a dirty little game that colonizers have mastered – indoctrinating citizens to internalize the systemic violence baked into capitalism.
